I'm Becca - mom to four cute kiddos, professional photographer, chocolate addict, in love with all thing wildflowers, and (most importantly) a sinner saved by grace through faith!
I have always wanted a fairy garden in my yard, but never found the perfect place to do it at our old house. Now that we’re moved into our new home (follow all the updates and progress on Instagram!) I knew making a fairy garden would be a fun project to do with the kids. Plus I had the perfect spot in mind: next to one of the big trees in the front yard. Instead of building it around the base of a tree or in a flower bed, I opted for the flower pot method. The result was a super fun, semi mobile flower pot fairy garden that has brought us so much joy over the past week!
To make our flower pot fairy garden, the kids and I headed to Hobby Lobby and Home Depot. At Hobby Lobby we got all the accessories we would need – a fairy house, fairies (of course), a gnome for James and a few other little decor items like a mushroom and picket fence. The pots, dirt, flowers and greenery were all found at Home Depot. I love including the kids on shopping trips like this because it makes them even more excited for what we’re making. And I enjoyed hearing their commentary while picking out items for the garden, and why we *needed* that specific flower for the fairies.
A little note! When picking plants for your garden, make sure you pay attention to the required hours of sunshine. Since I knew our garden was going to be in mostly shade all day, I made sure to stick to plants that would thrive in that lighting situation.
The next morning we got to work making the flower pot fairy garden come to life. We all had a great time, and seeing their smiling faces when they stepped back to admire their work was priceless. Frances is especially proud of what they made, because every morning when we play in the front yard she points to it and says “fairy garden!”. So stinking cute!
An added bonus to making a fairy garden that you can use it to teach the kids responsibility. Mine are now tasked with watering the flowers and keeping an eye on the plants to make sure everything is growing well. They love helping out, and I hope this helps foster a love for gardening in their hearts.
If you’re looking for a fun activity to do this summer, I highly recommend making a flower pot fairy garden! You can make it as big or little as you want, AND you can even add to it in the future. I can definitely see our tree becoming a little fairy city over the next few years.
Once you have purchased all of your supplies, it’s time to build your fairy garden!
If you have various sizes of pots, start with the largest one you have. Fill it up with soil. We used an entire bag of top soil, and then filled the rest of the pot with compost. Get the next size of pot and figure out where you want to place it on the larger pot. Once you have a spot picked, fill that pot with compost. Repeat with any remaining pots.
Now it’s time to plant. Once they are all in the perfect place, you will fill the rest of the space with the decorations. Tip: If you have a fairy house, find a spot for that first since it’s going to be on the larger side. The rest of the decorations can be placed after the plants.
When planting, make sure to dig a big enough hole in the dirt to cover all the roots. Gently remove the plant from the container and slightly loosen the dirt around the roots. Then place it in the hole you dug, smooth the dirt around the top and make sure everything is tucked in nice and neat.
When you’re happy with how everything is set up, make sure to give your garden a good watering. This will help the soil settle and reduce the chance of transplant shock on the plants. Follow the instructions on your plant label to know how frequently to water them!
Now it’s time to step back and admire your beautiful Flower Pot Fairy Garden!
