Ingredients
Quilt scraps
Double Fold Bias Tape (around 2-3 yards)
Sewing machine
Thread
Scissors or Rotary Cutter
Quilting Ruler
Instructions
- Cut out the triangle pennant pieces. Mine measured 6″x6″x6″. To make it quick, I cut one piece as a template and traced it onto the fabric with a fabric marker. Cut out each triangle with either fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and quilting ruler.
- Decide on the order of your pennants. Since each piece will look a little different, it’s good to make sure you like the order and how they all look lined up before you sew them together.
- On your sewing machine with a regular straight stitch, sew down one of the pennant sides, pivot at the bottom point and sew up the other side. This helps keep the fabric from fraying and gives it a more finished look. Don’t worry about the top of the pennants, since that will be encased in the bias tape in a later step!
- Start to unroll your bias tape. Measure about 2′ from the end and mark it with a washable fabric marker. This will be the extra length used to tie the banner up! Open the bias tape all the way, and fold down the raw edge 1/2″. Then fold the bias back together so the ends are neatly tucked in. Clip it together so it doesn’t come unfolded.
- Using a regular straight stitch on your sewing machine, start by sewing the short edge of the tape and then pivoting at the corner to sew the length of the tape. Edge stitch along the tape until you come to the previously marked spot.
Keeping the foot of the sewing machine down, open the bias tape and place one of the pennants in between the folds of the bias tape. Make sure the middle fold is hitting the top of the pennant piece and the bottom edges are lined up. You can pin or clip the pennant in place, but I like to just go for it! - Continue sewing the bias tape until you near the end of the pennant piece. Then once again open the bias tape and place the next pennant piece in between the folds of the tape. Pin or clip in place. Continue these steps until all the pennant pieces are sewn together.
- From the end of the last pennant piece, measure another 2′ and cut the tape. Fold the bottom under so the raw edge is neatly tucked in. Continue sewing down the length of the bias tape until you reach the end. Pivot at the corner and sew the short end. Back tack.
- Trim any loose strings and then admire your beautiful quilt pennant banner!
