HEY THERE!
As I approach my third year of homeschooling, I am full of the excitement and anticipation that always comes with the beginning of a new school year. Growing up this was my favorite part of the summer. I loved shopping for back to school clothes, picking out the *perfect* school supplies, meeting my teacher and starting a new year of learning.
Now as a homeschool mom I spend the summer planning out what we are going to learn in the upcoming months. There’s not as much excitement for the kids (they already know their teacher and we buy supplies as needed), but I look forward to picking out our curriculum and purchasing all the books we will be using throughout the year. While we DO loosely homeschool throughout the summer (we’re only doing math, science and social studies), there’s much less structure, and days and weeks will go by without opening a book.
Today I have decided to share our 2025 Homeschool Plans. Partly because I know many other mamas out there are curious, but also because I love encouraging others who are just starting out on this journey. If you’re new to homeschooling, I pray this can help you as you navigate all the hundreds of options that are out there to find one that is the best fit for your students.
But before we dive in to curriculum, I wanted to share the method we follow for homeschooling. When I was first learning about different methods and teaching philosophies, the one that resonated with me the most was Charlotte Mason’s. As I read her book “Home Education” I found myself saying “Yes. Yes! YES!” as I read.
She views children as people, who deserve a rich and meaningful education. Charlotte Mason aims to provide each child with a “feast” of subjects, presented in short, intentional lessons with a focus on narration and living books. She encouraged learning in and through nature. And she emphasized good habits like paying full attention, doing your best effort and learning for the sake of learning.
For most of the subjects I have gone with Simply Charlotte Mason. I wanted a curriculum that was easy to follow, required little prep work and was still interesting and engaging for the kids. After using SCM last year with James, I was sold. One of the things I loved the most about it is that I could teach certain subjects to multiple ages at the same time. We’ve been doing that this summer and it’s worked very well so far!
The two areas in which I have decided to go with a different curriculum are Math and Enrichment. I really love The Good and The Beautiful’s math workbooks, and even though they are not Charlotte Mason based, I believe they are still a great learning tool for my kids.
As for Enrichment, we are going to continue using the Morning Time guides from Brighter Day Press. I absolutely loved Vol 1 and am looking forward to starting the next one!
James will be starting 2nd grade in the fall, which is just wild to think about. He will be doing the 3rd grade reading lessons, 2nd grade math and family lessons for science and social studies with June.
Reading: New Friends and More New Friends (books from SCM)
Handwriting: Handwriting Series: Cursive, Book 3 (from SCM)
English: Using Language Well, Book 1 (from SCM)
Math: Math 2 (from TGATB)
June will be starting Kindergarten, and she is SO ready. Charlotte Mason believed children should not begin formal learning until age 6, but I have opted to start her at 5 because she is just itching to learn. Because the resources from SCM are limited for her age, I went with The Good and The Beautiful for something simple and straightforward. She will be joining James for the science and social studies lessons.
Reading: Level K Language Arts (from TGATB)
Handwriting: Level K (from TGATB)
Math: Math K (from TGATB)
These will be lessons that I teach to James and June at the same time. If needed I will modify the activity or expectations for each kid depending on their ability levels.
Science: Pond and Stream + the Companion book (from SCM)
Social Studies: Modern Times (from SCM)
Enrichment (artist, composer, Bible): Morning Time Vol. 2 (from Brighter Day Press)
In just a few weeks we will be officially kicking off a new school year, and I am SO excited. If you have any questions or want to share your homeschool plans for this year, leave a comment below! I love connecting with other homeschool moms.
