I'm Becca - mom to four cute kiddos, professional photographer, chocolate addict, in love with all thing wildflowers, and (most importantly) a sinner saved by grace through faith!
For the past couple of years, my kids have been crazy about oatmeal. We started out using the individual packages, but with how much they were eating we eventually moved to making in on the stove. I’m glad we made the switch, because not only is it cheaper, but I love that we have full control over what we put in it. And to keep things interesting, we’ve had lots of fun experimenting with different flavors and ingredients. I know oatmeal seems simple and a no-brainer, but it’s so easy to get stuck in the rut of making the same thing over and over again. For that reason I thought I’d share our top three, kid approved recipes for you to try at home!
To begin, I always use the same base recipe: oats, chia seeds, brown sugar, collagen, salt, milk and water. Those ingredients in and of themselves make a tasty bowl of oatmeal, but if you’re wanting to take it to the next level then this post is for you!
Changing up the flavor of your oatmeal is super simple. Once the base ingredients are mixed together, all you have to do is add the extra ingredients and you have yourself a delicious bowl of food. The cinnamon apple variation does take a little extra effort, but I promise it’s worth it! My kids LOVE it when I make the special apples for their oatmeal.
You can also use things like bananas, granola, fresh fruit and even chocolate chips to add some variety to your bowl of oatmeal. I like mixing together foods with different textures so it’s more “fun” to eat. And when I’m feeling like a fun mom, I let the kids add sprinkles to their bowls.
Elevate your oatmeal game with these delicious variations made with simple ingredients.
Ingredients
Scale
Base Oatmeal Recipe:
2 cups old fashioned rolled oats 1/4 cup chia seeds 2 scoops collagen 1/2 tsp salt 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 cups milk (or plant based variation) 1-2 cups water
Vanilla Blueberry: 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup frozen blueberries
Make the base oatmeal recipe. In a large saucepan, mix together all the ingredients for the base recipe (oats, chia seeds, collagen, salt, brown sugar, milk and water). Add more or less water depending on the consistency you prefer for your oatmeal.
Vanilla blueberry: Stir in the vanilla and frozen blueberries into the oat mixture. Cook on medium heat while stirring regularly (to avoid burning on the bottom) until the liquid is absorbed and the oats are cooked, about 15 minutes. Serve and enjoy! You can also top with some banana and granola for an extra yummy bowl.
Cinnamon Apple: Core and dice the apple. Cook the apple in a skillet with 2 tsp of cinnamon and the tablespoon of sugar on medium/low heat. Stir until the apples are soft and have formed a yummy syrup with the cinnamon and sugar. Remove from the heat and set aside. Meanwhile add the rest of the cinnamon to the base recipe, and cook the oats on medium heat while stirring regularly (to avoid burning on the bottom) until the liquid is absorbed and it is cooked, about 10-15 minutes. Serve topped with the cinnamon apples!
Peanut Butter Banana: Divide the banana into two, and smash one half into the oats. Mix in the peanut butter, and cook on medium heat while stirring regularly (to avoid burning on the bottom) until the liquid is absorbed and it is cooked, about 10-15 minutes. Serve topped with the rest of the banana (sliced) and optional peanut butter chips.
